Swedish cultural studies tour

On the eve of our departure to Sweden I thought I would share this educational video and let my reader/s know posts might be a bit irregular in the coming weeks.  I might be able to post some interesting photos along the way but otherwise I hope to have lots of project ideas to blog about when we get back.

Getting closer

In the last week I have cut the box open, fitted hinges and magnetic latches as well as boring out a finger hole.  I am planning to make the insert dividers out of cedar so the finger hole will be backed with a contrasting darker colour which should look good.  The interior bottom has been lined with felt and I am now ready to design and build an insert to secure the chess pieces.

Take two

Nothing fancy second time round, just a simple chess board with a mitered frame.  I have only used the sander to barely clean up the surface and spent hours finish sanding by hand.  Next step is to apply the first few coats of finish and then cut the box open.

Using my noggin

After another failed attempt at framing a core I have finally managed a successful first layer.  One of the things I am enjoying with this type of work is being able to use up some of my smaller scraps.  This time I have found some old OB hardwood noggings I removed when I remodeled my bathroom.  Too short for much they have been sitting in my scrap pile for years.  The hardwood is much easier to handle than the soft cedar I was using last time.
